Description

This is the first of two advanced German language courses. The course aims at improving the students' all-round knowledge of contemporary German including knowledge of stylistic and regional variation.

Expectations

Note on attendance:
Languages are learned by doing, and the tutorial-style sessions in this course are designed to create an atmosphere in which students can try out their language skills on each other.  If you do not attend regularly and do not keep up with the work, you will therefore not only be hindering your own progress, but you will also be holding back the other students with whom you are working. If you have a clash with other subjects and you are not able to attend all the four weekly tutorials, please let the lecturer know in the first week of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course you will acquire advanced skills in all four areas of the language-learning curriculum (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course the average student will be able to understand complex interactions, engage in conversations on specified topics with moderate fluency, write using a fairly complex sentence structure and read standard German literature.

By learning a foreign language students will develop more understanding of global conditions and will become competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts. This will help the language students to develop knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.

University Graduate Attributes

This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:

Critically competent in a core academic discipline of their award

Students know and can critically evaluate and, where applicable, apply this knowledge to topics/issues within their majoring subject.

Employable, innovative and enterprising

Students will develop key skills and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.

Globally aware

Students will comprehend the influence of global conditions on their discipline and will be competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts.
