Description

An introduction to communities of practice within the contemporary arts world.

FINA102 (SEM 1), Communities of Practice, provides students with the necessary critical language and contextual insight for them to reflect on their studio based programme and its place in the broader fine arts world. During this course, students will be taken to highly regarded art, design and multi-media studios, art galleries and cultural institutions to provide ‘real world’ models of how the visual arts are discussed, contextualized and disseminated.

Learning Outcomes

  • The student who passes FINA102 will:
  • Exhibit a basic understanding of the broad theoretical and operational roles of different types of art institutions and their mandates within the creative industries.
  • Be able to identify and reflect on different communities of practice and be able to select and apply known solutions to familiar and unfamiliar problems surrounding them.
  • Have begun to develop a broad understanding around critical language/vocabulary within the visual culture.
  • Have begun to demonstrate with broad guidance critical and reflective writing and thinking skills.
  • Develop and demonstrate rudimentary skills in class engagement in the contribution of constructive discussions that reflect critically on contemporary practice in the arts.
  • Evidence an understanding of and sensitivity towards the cultural contexts in which artists make   and display work within Aotearoa New Zealand.
