Special Topic in Fire Engineering

FIRE SAFETY ENGINEERING RISK ASSESSMENT

This is a Special Topic in the postgraduate Fire Engineering program with specific focus on risk analysis methods applied to fire engineering design.  The course assumes no prior knowledge of fire risk analysis but progresses to advanced topics throughout the course. The course starts with fundamentals of probability theory and the application of fault trees to determine probabilities.  Lectures will then focus on quantitative fire risk design and analysis based on event tree development and applying the results to develop fire risk curves.  The course will also cover reliability theory and the application to fire safety systems.  Several case studies will be included in this course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the students will have a fundamental and practical understanding of fire engineering risk assessment that will include:

1. Fundamentals of Probability theory
2. Fault Tree Analysis
3. Reliability theory
4. Qualitative risk assessment
5. Quantitative risk assessment

Prerequisites

Subject to approval of the Head of Department.
