Description

Loads and load paths in buildings and bridges. Design calculations for timber and steel structures. Engineering drawing. Construction and testing of simple structures.

Learning Outcomes

This course consists of two design projects; a simple building and a bridge. The aim of the project is to familiarise the students with the overall design process including construction and testing.

The bridge design project involves:

1. Aesthetics and Innovative design under environmental costraints
2. Choosing the optimal structural form of the bridge
3. Understand impact of loading on bridges and calculation methods such as influence lines
4. Building and testing small spaghetti models of the bridge to check global stability
5. Understanding the materials to be used and optimise their use
6. Estimating construction time and cost
7. From conceptual to detailed design
8. Learn to organize structural drawings
9. Bridge construction
10. Bridge testing and validation of detail design
11. Innovative IT communication skills.

The building design project involves:

1. Understanding load paths in a building structure under gravity loads and horizontal loads
2. Estimating the loads on building structures based on NZ load standards
3. Get familiar with ultimate limit state (ULS) design & serviceability limit state (SLS) design
4. Calculating strength demand
5. Designing beams, columns, walls and bracing systems
6. Engineering drawings of buildings

The bridge design project will be done in groups of 6 students, while the building design project is an individual assignment. Both the bridge and the building are to be designed using timber or wood-based products as the main structural material.

a) Every item of assessment must be competed satisfactorily in order to pass the course.
b) Test and Exam mark must be above 40% to pass this course, regardless of term marks.
c) Attendance to tutorials is mandatory and will be recorded.
