Description

Work Break-down Structure; Project Cost Scoping; Cost Databases; Pricing & Indexing; Feasibility & Conceptual Estimating; Quantity Surveying (Earthworks, Pavements, Structures); Variation Order Scoping; Contingencies; Stochastic Estimating; Industry Trends.

The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of how an engineer must break down the construction engineering process into its component steps and reassemble it into a straightforward, logical methodology for the development of accurate cost analyses of construction projects from the client’s standpoint. The course is delivered in block mode and will alternate lectures, discussions and short, high-impact team exercises that are designed to reinforce the lecture’s learning objectives.

On the first day, there will be a general introduction of Cost Engineering, some general concepts will be explained. The second and third day will be used to explore first principles cost estimating. During the days there will be exercises, lectures and discussions. The 3rd day will end with the introduction of the first major assignment, which will be handed in some weeks later. The 4th day will be filled with an overview of the Engineering estimates and end with the second major assignment in which some literature investigating and critical thinking will be needed.
