Description

Processing technologies and systems for production of hydrogen, syngas, liquid fuel as well as heat and power from various energy resources including traditional fossil fuels and renewable resources (such as biomass); energy related environmental issues and analysis; energy system optimisation; energy related electrochemical systems.

      a. Electrode chemistry
      b. Fuel cells for power generation and corresponding technological challenges.
      a. Power storage (Batteries, Supercapacitors)
  • Refining and processing of Gaseous and Liquid Fossil Fuels (10 lectures MJW)
      c. Natural gas production: Natural gas well, Separations, Reticulation (pipeline), Industrial uses of natural gas
      d. Steam Methane reforming: The reformer, Reaction kinetics, diffusion limitation and heat transfer, Industrial uses of synthesis gas
      e. Liquid fuel production: Well management, drilling, exploration, etc.
      f.  Refining of crude oil: Hydro-cracking and the FCCU, Gasoline, kerosene, diesel, jet-fuel, pet-coke etc., Hydro-desulphurisation unit
  • CO2 emissions and mitigation
      a. Combustion basics: stoich ratio, excess air, available heat, oxy-fuel combustion etc.

COURSE REQUIRMENTS:
30 lectures, 3 assignments and end of semester examination

PREREQUISITES FOR THIS COURSE:
ENGR404. This is a required course for energy minor in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering. However, if the energy minor certificate is not required, students without taking ENGR404 may also be allowed to take ENCH483 with approval of Director of 3rd Pro Studies.

RELATION TO OTHER COURSES:
ENCH483 is an optional 3rd Professional course however, it is required for students who want to receive a certificate of energy process minor.
