Description

Laboratory and pilot-plant experiments, design and analysis of experiments using statistical methods, and computational tools useful for analysing data.

Learning Outcomes

  • Practical demonstration of hardware, concepts and phenomena in relation to the broader context of a process engineering system.
  • Solve open ended chemical engineering problems by researching, designing, planning and conducting experiments.
  • Gather, manage, interpret and use experimental information appropriately.
  • Effective communication using a variety of formats to a variety of audiences.
  • Function effectively in a team environment by working cooperatively with your lab partner

Prerequisites

Timetable Note

• 6 experiments with process equipment at pilot plant scale, reported in various ways.
• 18 lectures.

Course Coordinator / Lecturer

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Formal Report 35% A longer and more in depth analysis of the results. In addition, students will supplement this with the data from other students who have completed the lab in the same year. This will result in an augmented statistical analysis, which may result in suggestions for lab improvements. Final report to be submitted 4 weeks after the experiment.
Management Report 1 20% Reports to management (due 1 week after the lab)
Management Report 2 20% Reports to management (due 1 week after the lab)
Short Formal Report 1 10% A rapidly-executed industrial report to immediate superior. The report is due on the same day that the lab is completed.
Short Formal Report 2 10% A rapidly-executed industrial report to immediate superior. The report is due on the same day that the lab is completed.
Workshop 5% A lab on P&IDs of CAPE's distillation column (approx 2 hours).

• 6 laboratory days with contact time 3-6 hours each, time of report preparation 10-25 hours for different report styles, total 130 hours
• Lecture attendance (approximately 15 hours)

Notes

All information about academic policies (e.g. special consideration, dishonest practice) can be found on the ENCH-Undergraduate LEARN page .

RELATION TO OTHER COURSES
This is a compulsory course for Chemical and Process Engineering. This course builds on the skills acquired in second year chemical engineering laboratories, extending the range of reporting, allowing the student to take more initiative, and generally increasing the size of the plant used to pilot scale. The experiments are related to other ENCH 300 series courses currently being studied.

Additional Course Outline Information

Attendance

Must attend all labs.

Where to submit and collect work

Reports need to be submitted electronically via Learn and a hardcopy should be handed in the box “ENCH395 CAPE Labs” at the entrance to the CAPE department level 4 LINK Building. If you wish to extend the deadline for handing in your lab report and have a good reason contact or see Alfred Herritsch.
