Description

Units, dimensional analysis, measurement, errors, report writing and fluid mechanics.

Topics

1. Basic concepts: fluid mechanics, liquids and gases, stress/force/mass, buoyancy, properties of fluids
2. The SI system for chemical and process engineering
3. Dimensional analysis of the variables used in chemical and process engineering systems
4. Pressure in static systems: pressure, manometers, atmospheric pressure, barometry
5. Dynamic systems:
• Bernoulli’s equation: applications of Bernoulli to flow measurement, including pitot tube, orifice, venturi, weir and rotameter
• Friction
• Pipe flow: laminar flow, turbulent flow, velocity profiles, pressure losses in pipes and fittings, non-circular ducts, double integrals to determine area
6. Scale up
7. Pumping
• Pumps: net positive suction head, complete system
• Control of flow with valves and variable speed
8. Pipe networks
• Solving for pressure and flow in pipe networks using Newton’s method
9. Brief topics
• Optimal pipe diameter
• Compressible flow

Laboratories

Fluid Flow Lab: There will be one afternoon (consisting of two laboratories) for each student to investigate pumping and flow measurement in the Civil Engineering Fluids Laboratory in the second term.  Students will work as a team in groups of 5 or 6.  A group report will be required.

Water Feature: During term 2, students will work in groups of 5 or 6 to design and build a water feature.  In the last Tuesday of the semester (2nd June), each group will demonstrate their water feature.  A group report will be required

Prerequisites

Subject to approval of the Dean of Engineering and Forestry.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Assignments 10% 2 assignments worth 5% each
Final Exam 55%
Laboratories 15% There are two lab components in this course. Attendance to both is compulsory, and all lab reports must be handed in to pass the course.
Test 20% A 50 minute test on content taught in the first half of the semester will be held in week 7 (5th April 10:00am - 10:50am) in place of the Tuesday lecture. You will need a calculator for this test.
