Description

Participants will engage with current thinking and practice around decision-making in organisations and will develop skill in identifying, critically evaluating and using diverse decision-making models. This course is designed for those who hold, or aspire to, positional leadership. Drawing on theories of organisational psychology, culture and change management, participants will solve an organisational problem, negotiating the dynamics of planned and unplanned change, and change resistance.

What do students get out of this course?

EDEM669 was developed by Annelies – Head of School for Educational Studies & Leadership – to ensure those with positional responsibilities in education contexts are provided with the opportunity to gain expertise in the theories that guide us in understanding how to generate optimal organisational decisions.  Educational leaders are running large organisations, but often their prior academic study has not introduced them to the body of work that informs and strengthens decision-making.

This is a fascinating body of theory that has immense practical application to both professional and private life. Many students, on course completion, comment that they wish they’d engaged with this body of knowledge a long time ago!

Learning Outcomes

  • On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  • Identify the key factors at play in the external environment in terms of leading organisational management and decision-making
  • Critically evaluate decision-making models and their fitness for purpose
  • Justify ethical principles that underpin decision-making
  • Understand and apply knowledge of power and political dimensions at macro and micro levels in both decision-making and change leadership
  • Complete a critical review, which includes an assessment of bi-cultural commitments in leadership and management actions, in the context of a significant organizational challenge
  • Formulate a detailed change process to lead in responding to an existing organizational problem.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Assignment 1 45% Apply two decision-making models to decide the optimal approach to resolving an organisational challenge. (LO 2, 3, 4) This will be due by 11pm on 3 April 2020.
Assignment 2 45% Develop a detailed change management process to consider how you would implement the resulting decision. Course members will be required to show how principles of the Treaty of Waitangi can be translated into inclusive practices in the action plan accompanying the assignment. (LO 5, 6) This will be due by 11pm on 12 June 2020.
Online forum participation 10% For each of the five topics that are covered in the course, students make a forum post on a course reading or resource of their choice (LO 1, 2, 3, 4). Students are recommended to complete these on a fortnightly basis (28 Feb, 13 Mar, 1 May, 15 May, 29 May).
