Description

By the end of this course students are expected to have a basic understanding of the range and impact of laws and regulations restricting the media and journalists in New Zealand, including their underpinning principles.

This course introduces you to the legal basics that every journalist should know, by examining the key laws and regulations affecting the media and journalists. You'll develop a critical understanding of basic media law and relevant regulations, as well as practical skills in court reporting.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course you're expected to have a basic understanding of the range and impact of laws and regulations restricting the media and journalists in New Zealand, including their underpinning principles. You should be able to demonstrate:

1.     an understanding of the range and impact of laws and regulations restricting the media and journalists in New Zealand, including their underpinning principles
2.     effective organisational and time management skills, including an ability to meet deadlines
3.     an ability to write and edit journalism to recognised industry standards
4.     an ability to identify and act within ethical, legal and regulatory obligations
5.     an ability to critically evaluate journalism practice

Prerequisites

Limited Entry: Subject to admission to the Journalism Major and permission from the Head of Department.
