Description

In this course students evaluate the relative impact of biological, social, cultural, and cognitive factors on speech and language acquisition and critically evaluate theories proposed to account for stages of development. Students compare and contrast techniques of clinical linguistic analysis to equip them to analyse a speech-language sample collected for a case study in order to draw conclusions about the stage of speech/language development reflected by the data.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Weekly phonetics tutorials 25% Weekly tutorials will assess students' understanding of the content of preceding lectures on phonetics and give them practice in acoustic analysis with the Praat program, and in transcription of normal and disordered speech.
Linguisitics Test 25% This test will assess students' (i) understanding of the structural characteristics of English, and (ii) ability to analyse sentences at the clause, phrase and word levels. The test will contain (i) a number of short questions about the nature and function of certain sentence elements, and (ii) a number of sentence analysis tasks of the same kind as the class exercises.
Child case study 25% For the child study, each student will record, transcribe, and analyse a sample of a preschool child's conversational language using SALT software, and report on the child's level of speech and language development.
Phonetics Test 25% This class test will assess students' understanding of the concepts covered across terms 1 & 2.
