Description

Following CHIN151 and still focusing on the four basic language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, this course teaches how to conduct simple conversations, and read and write simple texts in Chinese at an elementary level, with an adequate cultural understanding of China.

This is an elementary level Chinese language course following the beginner’s course CHIN151. Students will learn more basic Chinese language for everyday communication. About additional 300 words in everyday use, as well as additional 150 Chinese characters will be taught advancing from what students have already learnt in CHIN151. The emphasis in this course is on the functional development of four language skills, which are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The course will lay a solid foundation for further studies in Chinese.

Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire skills in all four areas of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening), which will become the foundation for developing strategies and skills needed to interact in Chinese. By the end of the course students should:

- Among above words, be able to actively use 350 (additional 200 on top of CHIN151)
- Recognise 300 basic Chinese characters (additional 150 on top of CHIN151)
- Be able to actively apply basic Chinese grammar and expressions used in simple everyday situations (e.g., talk about family and health, retelling simple stories, live survival language such as hospital visits, etc.)
- have developed learner autonomy and reflective skills
- have acquired skills and competencies transferrable to a variety of disciplines

- have some intercultural awareness and sensitivity; and apply some global competency through communication in a second language.
