This course provides students with opportunities to progress towards the demonstration of 200-level competencies and professional qualities. The course is closely linked to Professional Inquiry 1. Associate Teachers assist the College to assess students' developing competence as a teacher.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:1. Demonstrate professional qualities at a satisfactory level or above2. Demonstrate appropriate competencies as stated in the Student Report Book3. Demonstrate an understanding of administration skills related to the management of early childhood settings4. All forms of cheating and dishonest practice are taken seriously and penalties will result. Students should refer to Regulation J of the General Course and Examination Regulations.
This course is competency based.A student will receive both formative and summative assessment during their teaching practice. Formative assessment is done informally through verbal feedback and on the written end-of-week-report. The last week and final report summary in the Professional Practice Report Book will be summative. Final results are reported on the College Grading Scale as a Pass or Fail.
It is expected that students will be in attendance on placement five days per week for a minimum of eight hours contact time per day. In cases of unavoidable absence from a centre placement, students must inform the Associate Teacher, the Centre for Professional Practice and Partnerships, and the Professional Practice Lecturer. This should be done before the due time of arrival at the centre, or as soon thereafter as possible.
Formal and informal evaluation will take place in accordance with the relevant Course Evaluation Policy, to provide feedback to teaching staff about the relevance and validity of what has been learned as well as the quality of course delivery.
The College of Education Health and Human Development undertakes a process of internal and external moderation of assessment. This is to ensure that the assessment system is fair, equitable, consistent, and manageable.

Extensions are reserved for exceptional circumstances only and are not granted automatically.
Resubmissions are not available for Professional Practice.If, after moderation of Professional Practice, a ‘Fail’ grade is received, a repeat Professional Practice will be advised and the student will re-enrol and complete within the next Professional Practice dates. The student will not be able to fit in three Professional Practices during the year. Each Professional Practice must be passed before the student can advance to the next Professional Practice.
As well as attending classes, it is essential that all students regularly access the course Learn site. All course information such as the course kaupapa, notices, assessment information, required and recommended readings, audio recordings of some lectures, and other teaching resources etc. will be available on this site.
Students may apply for special consideration if their performance in an assessment is affected by extenuating circumstances beyond their control, where:(a) they have suffered an acute illness, injury, or other reasonably unforeseeable circumstances:i. which has prevented them from completing any major item(s) of work for assessment in a course; orii. which has impaired their performance (including by interruption of pre-assessment revision) to the extent that the result(s) are likely to underestimate their true and evidenced level of mastery of the material in the course; or(b) i. they have been selected to perform, compete, adjudicate, or officiate as a national sporting representative at national or international competitions; orii. they are members of a national cultural group on tour nationally or internationally.Please note that applications must be supported by evidence.
