Description

SPSC420 explores current issues related to culturally-responsive and ethical clinical and research practices. This includes a focus on the provision of Speech-language therapy services in a bi-cultural context and engaging and supporting individuals and whanau representing the multi-cultures living in Aotearoa - New Zealand. Topics covered include te Tiriti o Waitangi; ethical practices; family systems approaches, and; models of counselling.

Intended learning outcomes represent what you should know and/or be able to do as a result of active engagement in the learning processes during SPSC420. Below is a table that represents the intended learning outcomes of this course, along with the associated learning method(s) and assessment task(s).

1. Develop knowledge and awareness of your own culture.

2. Describe the historical socio-cultural-political context of Aotearoa New Zealand, including te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the meaning of this for Speech-language therapy clinical and research practices.

3. Demonstrate understanding of pōwhiri and marae protocols including introducing yourself using mihimihi.

4. Critically reflect on the NZSTA code of ethics and general principles of ethical conduct of speech-language therapists.

5. Integrate knowledge of ethical principles with theoretical ethical frameworks, and use this to formulate responses to ethical dilemma encountered in clinical practice.

6. Demonstrate understanding a variety of interpersonal counselling and coaching techniques.

7. Demonstrate an understanding of family systems approach to speech-language therapy practice.

These learning outcomes will be achieved by:

 Engaging in discussions and activities during lectures.
 Reading, reflecting on, and discussing assigned readings and online resources
 Preparation of assignments

 Case study of an individualised model of support and care - based on Māori, Pasifika and other
   models of care (including brief in-class presentation) (40%).
      o Presentation due Monday 14th March – in class.
      o Assignment due Friday 1st April – 10pm.

 Ethics assignment (30%) due Friday 13th May (10pm)

 Counselling and coaching assignment (30%) due Friday 3rd June (10pm)
