Description

This course examines sociological and pedagogical theories and practices related to sport for athletes with disabilities. Historical and contemporary perspectives will be critiqued and students will gain an understanding of the implications of these perspectives for sporting environments. The course will provide students with the opportunity to apply inclusive coaching practices in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explain how historical perspectives on disability and disability sport have influenced current sport practice  
2. Explain and apply selected sociological theory to current disability sport issues
3. Evaluate current policies impacting upon disability sport within New Zealand
4. Demonstrate knowledge of inclusive strategies and apply these in a variety of settings
5. Develop an understanding of sport classification and classification issues
6. Develop an understanding of specific impairments and coaching implications

Prerequisites

Any 30 points at 200 level from SPCO.
