Description

This course engages students with exciting and innovative coaching and teaching approaches that are learner-centred, inquiry-based and growing in popularity across the globe. Through a blend of theory and practical application students will gain a working knowledge of the philosophical and pedagogical developments underpinning this approach. This is enhanced through student engagement with cutting-edge research as they critically reflect upon their own teaching and coaching experiences as active learners.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Articulate a sound comprehension of the Learner-Centred Approach and the aims and principles underpinning it.
2. Plan and Implement a games-based learning session and employ self-reflective tools to evaluate your experiences as both an educator and learner during the practical class sessions.
3. Discuss the reasons for, and challenges involved with questioning during humanistic educational environments and compare this to other approaches or models.
4. Identify and discuss the learning theory and assumptions about human learning that underpin learner-centred approaches to teaching and coaching.
5. Critically reflect on the role the sport & PE plays in upholding te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) in educational settings.
6. Demonstrate understanding and application of mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) as this relates and applies to sport & PE in Aotearoa NZ.

Prerequisites

Any 60 points at 100 level from any subject.

Course Interaction & Engagement 20% Attendance and participation for lectures & workshops. Note: Distance students will also be required to meet on-line attendance and participation requirements.
On-line Test 15 Sep 2021 30% On-line test of first six weeks of course content (LO's 1,3, 4, 5, 6)
Session plan & essay 22 Oct 2021 50% Deliver & reflect on a well-planned learning session employing a games-based methodology (LO 2)
