Description

This course will include substantive content on communicating across the life course, communication for practice with Maori, communication for working with diverse communities, communication for advocacy, professional communication (legal and ethical), documenting for practice, and working in groups (teamwork). This course is an introduction to aspects of professional communication in a practice/workplace environment. Common communication dynamics associated with teamwork, breaking bad news, addressing conflict, and macro advocacy will be explored. The course utilises a blended learning format.

Learning Outcomes

  • An understanding of skills used for communication across the life course and in professional contexts.
  • An understanding of factors that influence interpersonal communication
  • Developed awareness of ways to engage with Māori using indigenous frameworks in a practice context.
  • Explored how to communicate cross-culturally with diverse communities including, but not limited to, Pasifika communities, people with disabilities, and children and older persons.
  • Developed knowledge and skills of micro and meso communication for advocacy.
  • Developed an understanding of the professional, legal and ethical standards for communication in practice.

Prerequisites

Any 15 points at 100 level from HSRV or SOWK, or
any 60 points at 100 level from the Schedule V of the BA  or BC, or
from Schedule C to the BSW(Hons).
