Description

This foundations course in research methods and methodology introduces Masters students to key philosophical foundations of knowledge generation and research practice from both 'Western' and Indigenous knowledge standpoints, and reflecting a range of disciplinary perspectives. It equips students to understand and apply a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches to research, as well as engaging with ethical principles, practice and issues that arise within research from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Students will learn what is meant by Maori and indigenous ontologies and epistemologies and explain how they relate to research practice within a range of disciplines, and have the opportunity to specialize in an area of their interest.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course successful students will have demonstrated their ability to:

1. Understand and apply some key philosophical foundations of knowledge generation and research practice from a range of disciplinary perspectives.
2. Critically discuss and know how to apply a range of disciplinary quantitative and qualitative approaches to research including being able to identify the commonalities of the approaches and describe their distinctive features.
3. Independently extend their knowledge, understanding and application of one particular approach to research.
4. Identify and work within models of research that recognise and respect cultural diversity, group and individual expertise within authentic research settings where the focus of attention is on interests of the participants and/or community.
5. Understand what is meant by Māori and indigenous ontologies and epistemologies and explain how they relate to research practice within a range of research disciplines.
6. Identify, discuss, and address ethical principles, practice and issues that arise within a range of research disciplines.
