Special Topic: Modern Research MethodsThis course is concerned with methods and strategies that are of major importance to psychology and other behavioral sciences. It places a heavy emphasis on acquiring an in-depth understanding different types of modern research methods as they occur in their proper scientific contexts.The topics and methods to be covered are as follows: research perspectives, strategies, and methods; the significance sameness paradigm; tests of statistical significance; the new statistics, Bayesian statistical inference; a model of data analysis and replication; exploratory data analysis; exploratory factor analysis; grounded theory method; questionable research practices; and, statistics and scientific method in the 21st century. Attention will also be given to current methodological debates, such as the replication crisis, and proposals for methods reforms.
Students are expected to read conscientiously with a view to developing a critical understanding of the methods covered. The set readings are an essential resource in this regard. Research methods will be treated in terms of their history, underlying logic, appropriate research goals, and the critical issues that arise from their use. The course emphasizes the conceptual understanding of the methods and the need to make informed decisions about their proper use. Although the emphasis is on what we know about the research methods, matters to do with their proper and improper use will also be considered.
