Description

A broad treatment of human sensation and perception, with the main emphasis on vision, but also including the other senses.

This course provides a broad overview of sensation and perception. The goal is to develop both an understanding of the field and an interest in pursuing some aspects of it in the future. The emphasis will be on visual perception but perception in the other senses will also be covered briefly. There is a laboratory component that will let you experience some of the classic phenomena in the discipline for yourself.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of the course are to:

1. Gain an understanding of the fundamental processes that give rise to sensation and perception, and of the various factors that influence our perceptual experience.

2. Gain an understanding of the methods and techniques commonly used by scientists to answer questions relating to sensation and perception.

3. Be able to evaluate and interpret research findings critically.

4. Be able to do literature search on a topic, to synthesize research findings related to a topic, and to present the findings in writing.

Prerequisites

PSYC105 and PSYC106, or
with the approval of the Head of School, a pass in a professional year of Engineering, or
in approved courses in Art, Art History, or
Computer Science
