PROD387 Special Topic - Modern Methods in Formulation Science

The goal of this course is to explore specialised topics beyond the core aspects of formulation science. The course will broaden student’s perspective and improve their ability to assimilate and communicate knowledge in diverse applications related to formulation science. Four equally weighted modules will be covered, namely:
1. Plant-Based Medicinal Formulations (Dr Pram Abhayawardhana)
2. Bio-Mimetic Products Through Molecular Biology (Dr Ali Nazmi)
3. Nutrition and Healthcare Beyond Planet Earth  (Dr Sarah Kessans)
4. Microencapsulation and Controlled Release (Prof Conan Fee)

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning Outcomes Module 1
  • Understand the principles of biomimetic design and how molecular biology can be used to mimic natural materials to design, synthesise and create novel products
  • Understand the basics of molecular assemblies and how molecular principles and evolution of macromolecules can be used in design process
  • Learning Outcomes Module 3
  • Be able to describe the major methods used for microencapsulation of active components including drugs, vitamins, flavour and fragrance
  • Understand the kinetics of controlled release of active components across a range of applications
