Description

The design process for successful transition from product concept through to final design.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will practice their knowledge of design, realisation and production processes accrued in their 1st and 2nd year classes in the ideation and realisation of solutions.
  • Students will familiarise themselves with the workings of some typical appliances including their construction and internal component configurations.
  • Students will develop presentation and debating skills embodied by the creation of clear, concise presentations and participate in discussions. Generate theories and arguments around contemporary design theory and practice.
  • Students will practice developing concepts, designs and creative technical solutions within their chosen appliance market.
  • Students will practice and develop their 3D modelling skills to produce professional output.
  • Students will develop numerous realisations through various mediums and achieve proof of concept as part of the concept & product development process, culminating in ‘print’-ready CAD files.

Assessment Date and Weighting

Each week: Flipped lecture Rolling assessment - different consultancies each week, all consultancies to complete 1 flipped lecture over course of semester. 10%
Week 1: Design consultancy formation, No weight, formative only, penalty may be applied if deadline is not adhered to.
Week 2: Project plan 5%
Week 6: Concept design report (PDS and evaluated concepts) 20%
Week 12: Final design (Folio, drawing pack & poster) 50% Students must achieve a minimum of 50% for this assessment to pass, in addition to an overall 50% pass
Exam period: Final presentation 15%
Students must achieve a minimum of 50% for this assessment to pass, in addition to an overall 50% pass
