Description

Advanced study and participation in musical performance within an ensemble, either in live performance or in CD recordings.

The aim of this course is to undertake advanced study of, and participate in, musical performance with or within an ensemble.

Students will be expected to form an appropriate group (or groups) normally of at least three musicians, and devise a balanced programme of 45-50 minutes.  The assigned tutor will provide reasonable assistance, normally on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and approve the programme.  A variety of styles, instrumentation and musical approaches will be encouraged.

This programme will be prepared and presented at a School of Music concert or other appropriate venue, as agreed to by the course coordinator, normally to be held during or immediately preceding the end-of-year examination period. Alternatively, a CD of 45-50 minutes duration may be prepared and submitted for assessment by the end of the fourth term; the CD should be largely the result of ‘live’ takes, with a minimal amount of editing and post-production enhancement.

In recording and preparing the CD, each student is entitled to up to 3 x 3hr recording sessions (with a small amount of set-up assistance from a staff member) and up to two hours with the School of Music’s technician – possibly also with the tutor present – to edit the ‘takes’ and construct the finished product.
