Description

This course aims to further develop the skills of creating and notating contemporary art music for live performance.

MUSA221 aims to further develop and broaden the skills acquired at 100 level, of creating and notating contemporary art music for live performance (vocal and instrumental), to assist in the development of more sophisticated knowledge of compositional techniques and procedures, and verbal articulation skills regarding compositional goals, compositional philosophy and methods and approaches to music notation.  Students will compile a portfolio of works together with associated drafts, documentation, reflective commentary and philosophical statement.  They will also gain an analytical understanding of contrasting works from the contemporary notated composition repertoire.

  • Have developed some knowledge and understanding of composition procedures in notated
     exercises and works;
  • Have acquired some analysis and commentary skills relating to contemporary practice;
  • Have developed some skills in the articulation of personal composition goals, and writing
     programme notes for their own work;
  • Have developed basic composition style and procedure knowledge derived from an exploration of
     works from contemporary notated composition repertoire;
  • Have developed some self-reflective skills regarding the creative process and the development of
     each work

• 12 hours attending lectures
• 18 hours attending composition workshops
• 6 hours attending small group tutorials
• 32 hours completing analytical exercises
• 82 hours drafting and writing portfolio content

All assessments are due by 12 noon on the specified date. You should submit a hard copy to the assignment drop-box in the School of Music foyer with an Assignment cover sheet attached. The Analysis assignment and Workshop Diary must also be submitted via your course’s LEARN site using the Turnitin function.
There is one analysis assignment, a portfolio and a workshop diary for this course.

Your portfolio should contain at least three compositions. One must include multiple musical looping procedures. One must include a voice and a verbal text. The remaining composition(s) is/are entirely free.
In addition to the assessment in this course you must present at least one work in the Composition Workshop. This is compulsory and required to pass the course.

Applications for Aegrotat passes are not permitted in this course.
