Description

Further development of song-writing skills: creative approaches, notation skills, text setting, poetry, word painting, covers and stylistic vocabulary.

Songwriting 2 builds on Songwriting 1 by introducing advanced skills and techniques that help the student to develop their own unique mode of musical expression.

This course introduces advanced skills in melody writing, harmonisation, text, and song structure. Under the guidance of the course lecturers, the students prepare a high quality portfolio of original songs that demonstrate developing mastery in the craft of songwriting. Current trends and practices in genres of songwriting tailored to the student’s special area of interest are also examined.

Students must attend one activity from each section.

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:
• 24 hours attending lectures
• 18 hours attending composition workshops
• 108 hours drafting and writing (and possibly recording or realising) portfolio content

Assessment

Student output consists of a portfolio and a class presentation. The portfolio must contain at least three original songs. At least two of these must be presented in draft version at a composition workshop. The presentation is in the form of a 15 minute mini-lecture given during class time on a topic related to the student’s area of musical focus.

All assessments are due on the specified date and should be submitted through the LEARN system. Late work will be accepted up to one week after the deadline with a 10% penalty.
