Description

This course further develops skills in musicianship and analysis, including counterpoint and chromatic harmony.

This course builds on students’ training in 100-level Musicianship and Theory courses. In MUSA200, the focus will be on chromatic harmony (learning to recognise and use chords which include notes from outside the diatonic scale) and counterpoint (the art of combining several melodies together). The course will continue to develop students’ skills in sight-singing, ear training, and musical analysis.

Learning Outcomes

  • Sight-sing tonal and modal melodies within a polyphonic texture
  • Harmonise melodies using chromatic chords within a four-part texture
  • Realize straightforward and short figured bass harmonisations at the keyboard
  • Aurally recognise and notate melodies in major and minor keys and modes
  • Aurally recognise and note harmonic progressions within a four-part texture
  • Analyse short musical works from score, including transposing instruments and C clef notation, identifying significant musical elements and structural devices and demonstrating an appropriate analytical lexicon
  • Find patterns in complex information

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:
▪ 24 hours attending lectures
▪ 11 hours attending keyboard labs
▪ 40 hours completing the Practical Harmony tasks
▪ 10 hours preparing for written tests
▪ 20 hours completing analysis assignments
▪ 45 hours self-directed study
