Description

This course develops sophisticated choral singing skills, good rehearsal techniques and discipline, and diction in English and other languages. Public performances are a part of this course.

The aim of the course is to equip you with the skills required of choral singers through a range of repertoire.  There will be weekly rehearsals, and performances scheduled throughout the year.

Learning Outcomes

Students who pass this course will be able to:
*  sing a vocal line accompanied;
*  pronounce simple texts correctly;
*  sight sing basic music with an accompaniment;
*  attend rehearsals regularly and punctually;
*  show commitment and team work throughout the year;
*  focus during rehearsals by marking scores.

Prerequisites

Entry by audition, approval of the Head of School.

Timetable Note

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated approximately as follows:
*  100 hours attending
*  15 hours attending performances
*  18 hours for own practice
*  17 hours for writing learning logs

Semester 1 Singing Test  (15 minute time-slot between 4.00 and 6.15 pm)
You will be required to:
*  Perform 4 basic extracts from 'Consortia's' Semester 1 repertoire (20%)
*  Pronounce the text correctly (7.5%)
*  Sight-sing basic music accompanied (7.5%)

Semester 2 Singing Test (15 minute time-slot between 4.00 and 6.00 pm)
You will be required to:
*  Perform 4 basic extracts from 'Consortia's' Semester 2 repertoire (20%)
*  Pronounce the text correctly (7.5%)
*  Sight-sing basic music accompanied (7.5%)

Commitment
In 500 words, you are to summarise your attendance, commitment, team work, focus and learning throughout the year.  While this summary won't be assessed, its content will be used to award a grade for these aspects in conjunction with the lecturer's assessment.

Assessment and grading system

The following shows how to translate grades to numerical scores:

A+  90–100;    A   85–89;    A-  80–84;    B+   75–79;    B 70–74;    B-   65–69;     C+  60–64;     C  55–59;     C- 50–54;     D  40–49;   E  0–39
In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.

A pass is 50 marks and over.
