Description

Students develop technical skills in an instrument or voice, music knowledge and understanding through performance on an instrument or with voice, and develop a knowledge of the repertoire for that specific instrument or voice. This course is only available to students in the Mus.B.

The course aims to develop technical skills, musical knowledge and understanding of an instrument or voice, through regular lessons, practice and rehearsals that lead to two (or more) public perfor-mances through the semester. The course also develops knowledge of repertoire for the specific in-strument or voice, as well as a working knowledge of chamber and ensemble music that includes it.
To support the public performance skills expected of the student, attendance is required at a weekly Combined Performance Workshop (Monday 6:30-8pm); also required is attendance at a Perfor-mance Class related specifically to their instrument/voice; and the students are also expected to be available for at least four of the Friday lunchtime (1:10-2pm) concerts held in the Arts Centre Recit-al Room to perform and/or support (by listening to) their community of fellow students, perfor-mance staff and selected guests.
All these activities are subject to what is advisable under COVID conditions.
This is the first course in a sequence that leads the student towards MUSA342, in which the student will be expected to demonstrate a superior professional level of performance.

Individual Performance Teachers are assigned to each student

Assessment

Teacher’s Grade 30%
Combined Performance Workshop attendance and engagement 10%
Performance Class appropriate to the participant’s instrument or voice 10%
Public Performance 1 with self-reflection 25%
Public Performance 2 with self-reflection 25%

The teacher’s grade will consider such things as: an assessment of punctuality and reliability in attending lessons, consistency of practice and learning through the semester, growth of the student’s technical mastery, and breadth of engagement with the repertoire. The teacher’s grade could also include assessments from one or more technical exams set during the semester.

Participation in the Combined Performance Workshop (Monday 6:30-8pm), and any Performance Class specific to their instrument are important support systems to the learning environment provided by private lessons. All vocalists are encouraged to take part in a performance project connected with the Consortia singers & band; this will meet on Thursdays at 6:30-8:30 in the Arts Centre Recital Room.

Performance Classes are scheduled as:

Brass Ensemble Tuesday 1:15-2:45pm Recital Room
Voice Workshop (“classical”) Wednesday 12:30-2pm Recital Room
(Both “classical” and “contemporary” vocalists are welcome at both workshops – with the distinction provided to facilitate the particular focus of the student)
Strings Wednesday 3pm Recital Room
Piano Workshop Wednesday 7pm Recital Room
Wind Ensemble Thursday 4:30-6pm Camerata Room
Percussion Ensemble Thursday 4-6pm 35 Creyke Road
Contemporary Workshop (voice, guitar, drums et al) Friday 3:30-5pm Recital Room

A minimum of two public performances throughout the semester, either on the Friday lunchtime concert series, at the Combined Performance workshops (Monday at 6:30pm) or another venue, as arranged with the Head of Performance; a self-reflection needs to be submitted on LEARN within one week of each performance. The two (or more) performances through the semester ask the student to aspire to an artistic performance of solo – or small ensemble repertoire that features the student’s instrument or voice – with stage presence, interpretative insight, as well as the successful integration of a developing “technical” mastery.

If COVID conditions make public performances impossible, submission of a video performance will be possible: should it be necessary this will be facilitated through the School of Music.
