In this course students will learn how to create their own music and audio content in a home studio, and prepare it for. The course is aimed at anyone interested in honing their knowledge of music production using readily available tools. This might include (but is not limited to) podcasters or video bloggers looking to enhance the quality and impact of audio materials, singer songwriters who want to record and produce their own music, or bedroom producers who want to create their own tracks at home. No prior experience in audio production or music is required, and all equipment required is provided for the duration of the course. Skills taught include Digital Audio Workstation operation, field recording, equalization and dynamics processing, editing, mixing, and preparing digital files for upload or delivery. The course will be taught using industry standard software and hardware, but the skills are transferable to any situation.

Assessment #1: Podcast draft version Create a podcast of spoken-word material that includes both recorded and imported audio. The content could be an interview with a friend or family member; a discussion of a cause you believe in; or any other topic agreed by the course coordinator.Weighting: 20%Assessment #2: In-class presentationDeliver a 5 minute presentation on publishing to a commonly used media format, explaining relevant copyright and ownership issues. Weighting: 20%Assessment #3 Song writer acoustic arrangementFrom an in-class recording of a singer song writer made in week 2, produce a polished mix using this recording with at least three other sources. Weighting: 25%Assessment #4 Song writer loop-based arrangementUsing the same recording, produce a polished mix using prepared samples, loops, and grooves.Weighting: 25%Assessment #5 Podcast revised versionSubmit a revised and polished version of Assessment #1 incorporating feedback from classes and lab sessions.Weighting: 10%
