This course aims to further develop students' skills in creating and notating contemporary art music for live performance (vocal and instrumental), knowledge of compositional techniques and procedures, and verbal articulation skills regarding compositional goals and methods.
Composition 1B continues on from Musa121, further developing skills in creative fluency and growing the student’s knowledge and understanding of the complex world of contemporary music composition in all its diversity. In this semester students will begin to develop skills in critical self-evaluation to match their increasing control of musical materials and technique. As for Musa121, you will create a portfolio of musical compositions in any genre. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff and student performers, and for your work to be performed publicly in workshops and concerts. Lectures will build on skills taught in Musa121 by exploring more sophisticated techniques for creating and structuring musical materials. Continuing studies in instrumentation are supplemented by instruction in writing for solo voice and choir. Additionally, students will identify repertoire for analysis that is close to or relevant to their own creative practice, helping them to develop a critical perspective on their own work informed by recent trends and developments.

Students must present at least two works from their portfolio in a composition workshop or public concert during the semester.All assessments are due on the specified date and should be submitted through the LEARN system. Late work will be accepted up to one week after the deadline with a 10% penalty.
