In pursuing the ethical basis for business policy and practice, we will look at changing notions of corporate performance. Participants will address such issues as: What is success in business? What good does business do and how does it do it? What are major causes of the breakdown of business ethics? We will also study the practice of business ethics, with the aim to expand capacity for moral inquiry, dialogue, and decision making in ways that will be useful in your professional and civic lives.
This course considers the roles of organisations and individuals in business and society. The notion that corporations are simply wealth creating organisations, with little social and ethical responsibility to the broader public and the physical environment, is no longer acceptable. Communities command that corporations go beyond their economic brief to provide surplus resources in the form of philanthropy and other social initiatives. Assessment 1: Workshop activities will revolve around group discussions and participation. Attendance and preparation for workshops will be required to achieve these grades, unless a sound reason is given for non-attendance. In this case students will be expected to submit their responses to activities individually via Learn.Assessment 2: In this assignment you will conduct a stakeholder analysis for a NZ-based organisation of your choosing and make recommendations for the organisation to meet their responsibilities to these stakeholders. More details will be given in class. Assessment 3: The final assessment will be open book and consist of a mid of short answer and essay based questions. The exam will examine lecture material, text and course readings covered in the course. More details will be given in class.
