Description

To provide an in-depth understanding of leadership theories and their application to practice.

The course introduces students to a range of leadership frameworks and models and applies them to contemporary examples providing an in-depth understanding of the influence of leadership in organisations. Each participant will critically analyse the leadership practice of a selected leader before reflecting on their own leadership values and capabilities.

Learning Outcomes

Through this course students will;

1) Examine and evaluate emergent international best practice in leadership.

2) Explore assumptions and mental models that underlie leadership roles in order to critically reflect on enablers and barriers to change.    

3) Develop a detailed understanding of a range of leadership models.

4) Explore a toolkit of practical leadership strategies that can be readily implemented.

5) Apply leadership frameworks to the analysis of a selected leaders practice.

6) Reflect on their own leadership values and competencies.

Assessment

Assessment 1: Learn Quizzes 30%

Three quizzes (10% each) to examine your knowledge, understanding and application of course and lecture content of the prior three lectures.

Assessment 2: Leadership Inquiry 40% (Due: 30th May)

Explore and analyse the practice of a selected leader with respect to key leadership frameworks. Reflect on our own leadership values, purpose and capabilities (1500 words).    

Assessment 3: Leading Teams Presentation 30% (Due:  20th June)

Reflect and analyse the team dynamics and functioning of a team you have either led or been a member of, and suggest leadership actions that could improve its function.  Communicate the reflections, findings and suggestions in a short and concise 5-minute video.  

All assessments are individual assessments (i.e. there are no team / group assignments for this paper)
