Covering business law structures and regulations this course provides students with the insight, understanding and practical skills to develop strategic direction and solve business problems while effectively adhering to legal requirements.

Covering business law structures and regulations this course provides students with the insight, understanding and practical skills to develop strategic direction and solve business problems while effectively adhering to legal requirements.

This course covers the legal structures and rules which control and direct organisations in New Zealand.  It looks at the formation and implementation of law, considering the role that Parliament and the Courts play in the derivation and enforcement of the legal system.  

By applying this advanced knowledge to their general business understanding the student will gain the ability to understand and manage the structures and demands of the legal system within their Professional career.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the legal rules applying in a number of core substantive business areas, and account for their evolution.

  • differentiate between common and equity law and be able to classify, distinguish and use appropriate legal terminology.

  • demonstrate knowledge of the theory of separation of power and governmental accountability.

  • demonstrate an ability to describe how an Act of Parliament is passed and be able to read and interpret such Act.

  • evaluate the fundamental rights which apply to the business environment, including the unique significance of the Treaty of Waitangi.

  • identify specific legal rules which apply to a number of organisational situations and explain how the legal system drives management decision making.

  • describe the fundamental principle of contract law and demonstrate an understanding of how these principles apply in practice.

  • critically analyse the fundamental and consequent issues surrounding  Contract Law

  • apply the law to defined problems and provide recommended actions and  solutions.
