The effective management of people and the sustainability of human capital are major leadership responsibilities. This course provides a guide to this challenging area of leadership and aims to help you apply basic human resource management (HRM) principles and techniques in ways that are both organisationally relevant and topical.
The effective management of an organisation’s human capital and the sustainability of that human capital are major management responsibilities. This course promotes understanding of organisations’ human capital systems and critical thinking and reflection on key elements of these systems. The course aims to explore what may be expected of both managers and HR professionals, in the joint pursuit of improved organisational and individual outcomes. The aim is for you to develop evidence-based views of people performance topics and use them as a platform for creative leadership-focused interventions to fuel individual and organisational performance and culture. Reflective practice to build personal HRM performance is encouraged throughout the course.
Students will:1. Gain an understanding of the line manager’s role in the HRM systems needed to maintain the organisation’s human capital.2. Analyse how responses to individual employee and overall organisational HRM system issues must be aligned with, and contribute to, the overall strategic direction of the organisation.3. Develop the tools necessary to analyse HRM issues with a view to developing organisationally appropriate processes and interventions.4. Demonstrate the ability to participate and add value in group-based solutions to HRM issues

New Zealand: CCHThese books are ‘easy to read’ and will prepare you to explore your understanding of the content and, importantly, allow maximum time for application to enterprises during class time. The 2010 book is a traditional format text book. The 2017 one is more of a handbook for organisations, so easy to dip and dive, and useful for small business and sole practitioners in HR.If you have access to another general text on HR, you could consider using this as an alternative. The idea is to have access to reading about good people practices.Readings will be provided for some topics in addition. Students are encouraged to read more widely and access journal articles and other literature. This is expected for the assessment tasks.
