Description

MATH199(C) is a course in calculus, linear algebra and probability. This STAR course is designed for bright secondary school students who have done well in year 12 or year 13 NCEA Mathematics with Calculus and wish to take level 100 mathematics while still at school. MATH199(C) is for local Christchurch students. The course runs to the school year.

MATH199 (C) is a two semester, 30-point programme, comprising MATH102 in Semester 1 and MATH103 in Semester 2. Although the primary source for content is online, MATH199 students will be encouraged to attend the MATH102/103 lectures and will be required to attend a tutorial from 4.30pm to 6.00pm every Thursday during the UC term times.

This is a course on linear algebra and calculus. Linear algebra is about matrices and vectors, and deals mainly with the algebraic problems of solving systems of linear equations. It is also used to solve problems in geometry. The calculus part of the course deals with derivatives, integrals, differential equations, infinite series and the application of these ideas. You will also gain a basic knowledge of probability and its applications to calculus.

For further information about the topics covered and course aims, see MATH102 and MATH103.

Recommended preparation:
About 20 credits of mathematics with a good proportion of excellences and NCEA Level 2 or Level 3, or the equivalent for students not doing a full NCEA programme.
