This course follows on from second-year phonetics and phonology, covering selected advanced topics and current research in phonetics and phonological theory.
This course builds on second-year work in phonetics and phonology to broaden and deepen your understanding of the sound patterns of languages. In this course we will cover topics in phonotactics. Phonotactics is the area of phonology dealing with the ordering and arrangements of sounds. The aim of this course is to broaden your understanding of this area of phonology and to develop your research skills. In the first half of the course, we will cover phonotactics in language typology, from the perspective of categorical restrictions. The second half of the course will cover gradient phonotactics. In this section of the course, you will carry out an in-depth study of phonotactics using datasets from corpora. Here you’ll be shown how to analyse some data in R – but don’t worry, you won’t need any previous experience with R to take this course. It will be assumed the students in this course will have taken a 200-level course in either phonetics (LING215) or phonology (LING216).
