Special Topics in Linguistics

Topics in Language: Exploring Linguistic Anthropology

This course introduces the fundamental concepts, terminology, ethical considerations and methods in the anthropological study of language. Explores topics in language and culture, including the origin of human speech, language structure, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, language change and variation, multilingualism, language endangerment and revitalization, language and gender, and folk taxonomies. The class intends to explore the linguistic structure of language utilizing contemporary language data, in order to address the fundamental properties of language construction and identity negotiation in societies.

Prerequisites

Any 15 points at any level from any subject.
