An introduction to the law relating to Maori land and related resources.
An examination of the legal principles applicable to Māori Land; the history of Māori land legislation; present laws and practices; the effective utilisation of Māori Land; and proposals for future utilisation.
A successful student will, by the end of this course, be able to: Understand and explain customary Māori concepts and land tenure;Describe and apply legal principles relevant to Māori Land;Describe and critically analyse the history of Māori land legislation;Describe and critically analyse the history, functions, duties and practical workings of the Māori Land Court;Describe and critically analyse ways in which the law and the Māori Land Court might best meet the needs of owners, trustees, and custodians of Māori land.Develop skills to provide effective, practical and feasible advice to whanau, hapū and iwi for the utilisation and management of Māori land.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:
