The general principles of criminal liability. The law relating to indictable and other selected offences chargeable under New Zealand law. Procedure on indictment and summary procedure (excluding evidence).The aims of the course are:• to give students a critical understanding of the main features of the criminal law of New Zealand;• to introduce students to the main features of legal procedure relevant to criminal cases;• to introduce students to issues to be considered in any reform of the criminal law.
The objects of the course are: to allow students to develop an ability to appreciate how, and in what circumstances the legal principles of the criminal law apply; to allow students to understand the impact of existing rules of law or proposed changes.

Dr Roisin Burke will be joining the Law School in 2016 and will be a lecturer for LAWS202.
The course may be assessed by way of a midsessional test, a compulsory essay, a compulsory online quiz and a final closed-book exam.The assessment will be confirmed in the first week of lectures.
