The structure of the Criminal Justice system and the roles of the government agencies involved. An introduction to some Maori and Pasifika perspectives on the criminal justice system.
The course will provide students with an overview of the New Zealand criminal justice system and introduce them to some Maori and Pasifika perspectives of the criminal justice process.It will cover the structure of the Criminal Justice system, including:• The structure and role of government investigative and prosecutorial agencies: Police, Fisheries, Customs, Serious Fraud Office, Crown Prosecutors, ESR.• The jurisdiction and roles of the criminal courts (High, District and Youth Courts. • The Corrections system (prisons, probation, fines enforcement etc, community sentences, etc.) • Dealing with young offenders and the role of the Children and Young Persons Service. • Dealing with offenders with intellectual disabilities or mental health issues.The course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and understanding necessary for advanced level study in the Criminal Justice area if and when a specialist degree can be offered. Approval for such a degree will be sought in 2013 with the intention of introducing 200-level courses in 2014.
A successful student will gain and understanding of: the structure and key processes involved in the New Zealand criminal justice system; the role of the different governmental agencies involved; the nature of different sanctions that may be imposed on offenders and by whom they may be imposed; particular issues that arise in dealing with young offenders and offenders with mental health or intellectual disabilities ; Maori and Pasifika perspectives on the Criminal Justice system.
