This course explores different approaches in teaching and learning in a health professional context through an exploration of the current literature and research. Participants are required to assess alternative perspectives; analyse these rigorously; and communicate their rationale for accepting a model applicable to their work context. Participants will also identify and compare models of supervision and processes for the management of individual learning experiences in a health context. This course prepares students to design and manage learning and supervision in a healthcare environment.
In brief at the end of the course participants will be able to: Articulate an educational perspective applicable to own professional teaching role and context including as a member of an interprofessional team. Scope the potential of a clinical environment as a learning environment Plan and support and learning for individuals and small groups utilising workplace opportunities and ongoing placement experiences. This includes the expertise of the clinical team and working with others (own and other professions) to establish a positive learning culture while maintaining and promoting patient safety. Select and innovate with a range of teaching methods and supervision strategies. For example, online learning, simulation, approaches to supervision, portfolio development and assessment of clinical competence. Evaluate a training programme (or patient education initiative) and provide reports that meet internal and external quality requirements – including consideration of impact on learners and patient outcomes.

The course delivery model for HLTH415 and HLTH416 is designed to accommodate the demands of clinical work and acknowledge the difficulties associated with release time. There are three learning components On-line learning and self-directed learning activities designed to support the face to face sessions and assist with preparation for assignments. Two, 2-day face to face intensive workshops (9am – 4pm) An on-site visit (your workplace) or skype/zoom meeting with the course coordinated between blocks to support self-directed learning
