Description

This course allows for supervised research in an area of personal interest. It is of particular value for health professionals who want to examine a health related issue in depth, and develop research expertise.

This paper will examine qualitative research in health-related disciplines with an emphasis on the methodologies we use in qualitative research. This focus on methodology will allow students to develop a robust research proposal that recognises the connections between epistemology, methodology and the theory that may inform a qualitative thesis. We place particular emphasis on the use of interviews, the most common qualitative method used in health research, to examine participant-researcher relationships in qualitative research, the nature of data collection, and approaches to analysing qualitative data.  
The course will be taught over four block days, with two days in each term. Class contact will follow a seminar format in which students are expected to have completed the course readings and contribute actively to the discussion. A range of lecturers with expertise in different approaches will take part in the discussions which will include brief power-point presentations to introduce or sum-up an issue. Morning and afternoon sessions will each focus on one of the following themes:

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:
1. A critical understanding of qualitative methodologies commonly adopted in the health sciences.
2. Applied core concepts in qualitative health research to best answer a research question.
3. Demonstrated awareness of the methodologies and challenges surrounding qualitative research within their health discipline.
