Description

What can students do with their studies in Health Sciences? The course is designed to be a critical, theoretical, and real world examination of the practices and ideologies inherent in the delivery of health programmes in a range of settings. Students will apply the knowledge and skills developed in previous courses to a project developed in collaboration with external health providers.

Learning Outcomes

1. Recognise, analyse and apply knowledge from the BHSc degree to a health-related organisational environment.
2. Demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills; professionalism.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of a safe and inclusive learning and work environment.
4. Plan, develop, implement and evaluate a health-related project based on strong theoretical and evidence-based frameworks.
5. Understand the role of the Treaty of Waitangi in health-related organisations and projects; and integrate Treaty considerations into internship work.
6. Critically evaluate project progress and outcomes; and outline the value of the project personally, professionally and within the organisation.

Prerequisites

Any 60 points at 200 level from any subject including HLTH201, HLTH202, and MAOR270.

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Reflection one 20% A reflective piece of writing submitted after 30 hours of the internship.
Reflection two 20% A reflective piece of writing submitted after 50 hours of the internship.
Workplace supervisor evaluation 15% Short evaluation completed by workplace supervisor
Communication/contact with lecturer 5% Graded by lecturer; based on communication across the internship
Final report 40% A report which includes the material developed over the course of the internship and an overall summary of the experience

Additional Course Outline Information

Academic Liaison

Annabel Ahuriri-Driscoll and Tracy Clelland are in charge of liaison with students in the undergraduate health sciences courses as the BHSc programme coordinators in the School of Health Sciences. Your class will appoint a student representative to the liaison committee at the start of the semester. Please feel free to talk to the Academic Liaison or the student rep about any problems or concerns that you might have.
