Description

This course focuses on some of the most important and controversial debates in the historiography of modern Europe. Students will be encouraged to explore these debates in detail, to consider the historiographical context within which these debates have taken place, and to arrive at their own views based on their extensive research in primary and secondary sources.

Students will explore two key themes:  the origins of wars, and the history of genocides.  During the course we will look in details at:  (1) the origins of the First World War;  (2) the origins of the Second World War;  (3) The Holocaust;  (4) The Armenian genocide.  Students will then finish the course with a group task considering how far and how appropriately different historical events with a similar theme (i.e. the origins of wars; genocides) can be compared.
