Description

A German language course that follows on from GRMN 151, based on the communicative approach.

This course is the second semester of introductory German language. You should have knowledge of basic German grammar structures and vocabulary equivalent to A1, European framework.  The grammar structures you are expected to be familiar with are: present and perfect tense of verbs, modal verbs, accusative and dative objects, subordinate sentences with ‘weil’ and ‘wenn’, and two-way prepositions.

By the end of the course you will have German proficiency equivalent to level A2, Common European framework (CEFR).

Expectations:
Students in this language course are expected to attend class 4 times per week and to be prepared to participate in everyday conversations and role-playing exercises. This is a very important component of your learning, where you can receive immediate feedback. The course also requires students to do work outside the classroom: Kahoot is used to practice vocabulary and Facebook to practice your informal writing. You will also develop your unique German Instagram and use it as part of your oral exam.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course you will acquire skills in all four areas of functional literacy, reading, writing, speaking and listening. By the end of the course the average student will be able to understand interactions in everyday settings; in addition he or she will be able to name common objects of daily life, to express a range of basic wishes, and to use the present and past tenses to narrate simple events. Reading is a component of the course, and by the end of the semester you will be able to read brief texts and understand the fundamentals of German textual structures. You will practice writing intensively and will be able to narrate events and communicate basic information about yourself and your environment online and offline. You also will develop skills in digital literacy, searching in German on the internet, evaluating German online information, remixing internet information for presenting in class.

By learning a foreign language you will develop more understanding of global conditions and will become competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts. This will help you to develop knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.

Optional external exam:
After this course you will be able to sit the Goethe Institut exam, level A2. The exam will take place at the University of Canterbury. The date will be on a Saturday at the end of October. The exact date will be announced in September. The cost is approximately $80.
