This course allows Geography students to apply their discipline specific skills within business, government, industry and non-profit organisations while gaining work-related experience.
This course allows geography students to utilize knowledge gained from previous geography courses within business, government and non-profit organisations while gaining career-related work experiences, exploring compatibility with specific careers and companies, and becoming more mature professionally. It is designed to prepare you for transition from university into employment with practical experience of work in a relevant organisation.
The aims of this course are to:Apply geographical knowledge in a real world settingStudents to gain an awareness of the breadth of research and applications undertaken in industry, government or academiaDevelop research and communication skills

So, usually we don’t know until just before the course begins what internships and projects will be offered. We then make an effort to place students with the best match for both them and the organisation.Q: What assessments are there?A: This is covered in the course outline. (link). The main assessments are a CV and cover letter, an interview (if selected) and a final report. You must also complete 150 hours in an intern organisation.Q: How does the organisation assess my performance as an intern?A: This is done by the organisation using the form contained in the course outline.Q: Is it likely that I will be employed in the same organisation after an internship?A: Previous interns have had a variety of outcomes. Most have been employed (particularly those in GIS), some have been employed by the intern organisation, other have found employment with similar organisations elsewhere in NZ. Generally, we have found that interns are more likely to secure employment.
