Description

This course provides a deep and yet practical understanding of the processes involved in resource and environmental management in New Zealand, including the principles of kaitiakitanga. It aims to enable students to engage actively with the realities of the application of the Resource Management Act, and to be able to apply existing knowledge of environmental and/or human processes to the solution of environmental management problems. The course will be of interest to students with a wide variety of geographical backgrounds, as well as to engineers, lawyers, and those considering a career related to resource use.

Learning Outcomes

Upon passing the course students should have the skills, at a graduate level, to:
(i) Identify resource management issues, and the information requirements and steps to develop policies and plans to address those issues.
(ii) Understand the role expert evidence in a hearing and prepare expert evidence to a satisfactory level on basic issues.
(iii) Recognise that environmental management systems operate within a series of political and economic constraints which limit the nature of approaches and options considered; and appreciate the existence of alternative perspectives to understanding and responding to environmental issues.
