Description

Application of basic concepts in environmental science to understanding land, air and water processes, their interactions, and their management.

Environmental Science requires the integration of several scientific disciplines to address specific environmental issues. In ENVR411 we consider some of these issues using specific case studies that environmental science graduates may encounter in New Zealand and overseas. The course is built around a series of themes that explore the underlying issues associated with managing particular resources in our environment (water, air and land) and then considers the impacts that management can have on this resource and the options for mitigating these impacts.

Learning Outcomes

  • We aim to prepare emerging Environmental Scientists for issues that they may encounter in the workplace by using specific case studies. We emphasise connectivity across systems and the integration of knowledge from the many disciplines that underpin each case study. Recognising that environmental scientists cannot be experts in all of these subjects, the course seeks to enable students to synthesise the use of information and data from a variety of sources to make informed decisions.

  • Critically appraise the salient factors affecting a broad range of environmental issues that may be encountered as an Environmental Scientist.
  • Understand the types of measurements that may be required to assess environmental risks.
  • Develop strategies to assess and manage environmental issues, given limited financial resources.
  • Obtain and collate information about environmental case studies from the scientific literature, and other sources. Filter key pieces of information from reports that may also contain subjective viewpoints and unsubstantiated claims.
  • Write a succinct report that objectively presents data with the aim of informing decision makers, accepting that there may be a diversity of views on any case that you investigate.
