Description

This course introduces advanced concepts and principles of traffic flow modelling. Participants will also obtain skills in the practical application of traffic simulation software.

This postgraduate course will:

- Provide participants with advanced principles of modelling traffic flow dynamics.
- Provide some basic concepts of model based real-time traffic flow estimation using loop detector
data (i.e. Kalman filter)
- Introduce principles of traffic signal design at an isolated intersection and in a network.

No prior practical experience in transport modelling is assumed, although some previous  exposure to the theoretical elements of traffic engineering or transport planning is useful. The engineering undergraduate course ENCN412 (Traffic Engineering) or equivalent (e.g. ENTR401) is considered a useful pre-requisite.

Learning Outcomes

- Provide participants with a solid grounding in the advanced concepts of macro-, meso- and
micro-scopic traffic flow models and best practice in their use.
- Provide concepts of model based real-time traffic flow estimation using loop detector data
(i.e. Kalman filter).
- Students will learn some advanced skills in using a macroscopic and microscopic simulation
package (i.e. Cell Transmission Model-CTM and AIMSUN: https://www.aimsun.com )
- Case studies in real-work transport networks will be examined to illustrate the application of
traffic flow models and data, methods for calibrating, analysing and using them, and to
investigate their scope and limitations.

Detailed handouts/notes will generally be provided covering the topics discussed. Students are also
expected to annotate this material or make their own notes. There is no prescribed text, but some useful relevant documents are available in the Engineering Library and will be referenced where appropriate.  Similarly, many useful websites and online documents will also be referred to in the course material.

Some course material and web-links will be provided on Learn, the university’s online teaching system
(see separate handout), and students will be expected to use this to supplement any handouts and notes taken in class. Students will also be expected to monitor the Learn discussion & news forums for notices about the course and its assessment, and to use it to send back any queries.
