This course introduces the advanced concepts of traffic flow theory. Participants will obtain the knowledge of the principles of traffic flow analysis and modelling.
Advanced traffic flow theory applies the laws of physics and mathematics to describe and model the interactions between road users, vehicles and transport infrastructure. This postgraduate course introduces fundamental concepts and principles of traffic flow theory and modelling. It covers the following topics: - Measurements of traffic flow variables Statistical distributions of traffic characteristics Traffic stream models Car‐following theories Hydrodynamic theory of traffic flow Traffic queues and delays
Understand and explain advanced concepts and terminologies of traffic flow theories. Conduct analysis of traffic flow data and measurements of traffic characteristics. Describe the traffic patterns using microscopic and macroscopic traffic models. Apply analytical techniques in the planning, design, and operation of traffic systems; andApply queuing theory for analysing bottleneck situations in traffic systems.
ENCN412: traffic engineering or equivalent
Students must attend one activity from each section.
The course will comprise 24 hours of lectures, presented in two 2-day blocks in Semester 2, 2024: • 15-16 Aug 2024 • 26-27 Sept 2024Other than these days, students are expected to study the materials provided and work on relevant assignments.

Detailed handouts/notes will generally be provided covering the topics discussed. Students are also expected to annotate this material or make their own notes. There is no prescribed text, but some useful relevant documents are available in the Engineering Library and will be referenced where appropriate. Similarly, many useful websites and online documents will also be referred to in the course material. Some course material and web-links will be provided on Learn, the university’s online teaching system (see separate handout), and students will be expected to use this to supplement any handouts and notes taken in class. Students will also be expected to monitor the Learn discussion & news forums for notices about the course and its assessment, and to use it to send back any queries.
No prior practical experience in transport modelling is assumed, although some previous exposure to the theoretical elements of traffic engineering or transport planning is useful. The undergraduate engineering courses ENCN361 (Transportation Engineering) and ENCN412 (Traffic Engineering) or equivalent are considered useful pre-requisite.
